Our programmes fall within five thematic areas; Alternative School, Our Environment, Being Creative, Helping People and Outdoor Adventure.
Alternative School
The alternative school programme is the pioneer in the field of non - formal enrichment programmes. We have developed and run many and exciting activities for children under this programme among them; the Boogie Ride, an annual children’s train ride to Naivasha that brings geography lessons to life; Beyond Borders where we invite various embassies and consulates in Nairobi to make presentations to children about their countries and the Astro Village, the first ever children’s space observation and exploration programme. This year, we partnered with the University of Nairobi Chiromo Campus to introduce children to science – and have a programme currently running during the school holidays where we are getting children introduced to the functions of the various parts of the body at the department of Medical Physiology.
Outdoor Adventure
We developed this programme to get children to travel and appreciate the beauties of their country hence promote domestic tourism. Through it, we also create opportunities for children to touch base with nature, appreciate different cultures and environments and foster resilience. We have to date visited all the main National Parks and Game Reserves in our country and use the opportunities to learn about our nations conservation initiative, challenges and priorities.
Our Environment
We continue to register landmarks under this programme. In the last eight years, we have managed to fully rehabilitate Kikuyu Springs, the fourth water source for Nairobi and one of the sources of NairobiRiver with slightly over 16,000 seedlings; and are in the process of developing Kikuyu Springs as the First Children’s Biodiversity Learning Centre in the Country. We are in the process of seeking permission and consent from Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company whom we have worked with very well to start the rehabilitation of Sasumua catchments in Njabini beginning March 2009.
In 2007,we launched Growing up Green’ a school based children’s tree planting programme: in which every child enrolled in class one is required to plant a tree within their school compounds. This tree marks their entry into primary school which they are encouraged to own, tender and take care of to maturity during their eight years of primary education. By embracing and promoting ‘Growing up Green’ we hope to start and grow a culture in which every child enrolling in class one embraces conservation as a lifelong exercise by holding trees as treasures and symbols, which should be used to mark important events in their lives. We also hope to inculcate through this programme, a positive work ethic; a culture of sustained efforts towards achieving personal and community goals while at the same time giving these young children an opportunity to contribute to both local, National and Global environment and development. Moreover, by basing the programmes in the schools, we shall have created alternative forested that are available and accessible to schools communities on a daily basis.
Becoming Creative
Under this programme, we have successfully engaged children in creative activities and have a monthly children’s art programme dubbed Usanii. We have also undertaken to change the faces of our hospitals in through the hospitals mosaics arts project. Under this project, we create beautiful mosaic artworks from discarded ceramic tiles in partnership with Architectural Mosaics. We have so far created works for Gertrude’s Garden Children’s Hospital, 2002, Royal London Hospital in 2003, Drug Rehabilitation Center, Mathare Mental Hospital 2004 and Waldenbooks Cambridge in August 2005, and in 2006, we completed creating Mosaic Artworks for Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi which we believe could be the largest such undertaking in a hospital in the world and have just completed creation of artworks for Coast Provincial General Hospital Mosaics Project.
Helping People
Juhudi aims growing a generation that is compassionate and responsive to the needs of their neighbors. We do through visits to the children’s homes and homes for the elderly where we visit, play and have fun with them. We invite and host children from children’s homes and disadvantaged backgrounds in all of our programmes. We are currently in the process of developing the first ever social integration programme engaging all the social setups in Nairobi.
